First International Congress of
Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers,
San Jose, Costa Rica 1997

Exhibitors and suppliers are mostly familiar with one another through faxes, e-mail and the telephone. As remarkable as these technologies are, they are incapable of fomenting genuine human and business relationships. Recognizing the need for suppliers and exhibitors from around the world to meet in person, Costa Rica Entomological Supply organized and hosted The First International Congress of Butterfly Suppliers and Exhibitors which was held in Costa Rica in March of 1997.

SAYN Germany - October 2005
Approximately 60 ICBES delegates from 15 countries were present. About half the people present were from European facilities. After the meeting in Italy in 2003, ICBES returned to Europe with the specific intention of reaching out to the Europeans once more. With the momentum generated in Italy, followed by two very successful subsequent informal gatherings in Luxemburg (organized by Erik Hendriks) and England (organized by John Calvert) in 2004, it was apparent that past efforts in facilitating “European Integration” have been productive. The board members and committee chairpersons explained what they had accomplished this past year. This meeting, and the ICBES 2005 conference in general, may prove a turning point for IABE`s involvement with the European exhibit community. Special thanks to Dr. Enzo Moretto for establishing and maintaining the ICBES information. IABE is also grateful to Gabriela Princess zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn for hosting ICBES 2005, and to M. Gerlinde Blaese for serving as ICBES 2005 Local Arrangements Coordinator. Thank you to the IABE Conference Committee for coordinating IABE participation in this and other conferences.

European CBES (ECBES) 2006 Holland
October 6- 9, 2006. Organized by Colinda van der Meer - Vlindertuin Berkenhof, Ko Veltman - Natura Artis Magistra - Amsterdam and Louwerens-Jan Nederlof - Zoo - Rotterdam

The European Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ECBES) 2006 was very successful thanks to the great organization, participation and contents. There were many important discussion on many butterfly industry’s important topics, such as guidelines, presented by dr. Enzo Moretto chairman of IABE Guidelines and Recommendations committee; import regulations by Erik Hendriks; conservation and the importance of preservation of natural habitats by Ernesto Rodrigues from El Bosque Nuevo in Costa Rica; documentary film made in Costa Rica about butterfly farming by dr. Enzo Moretto of Butterfly Arc in Italy; conservation project by Caspar Bijleveld, chairman of the IABE Conservation Committee; statistics about European butterflies by Dutch Butterfly Foundation. Dinner in Colinda’s restaurant was superb and afforded everyone the opportunity make new acquaintances in the butterfly industry and to catch up with familiar faces from the past. Following the discussions there was a bus tour through the province of Zeeland to visit several landmarks and see the dikes that the Dutch Government had constructed to prevent the country, which is below sea level, to be flooded again as it was in 1953 with great loss of life. The third day was spent at the Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp where the main topic was conservation. Joris A. Brinckerhoff had a very beautiful presentation of Alaujela Butterfly Mural Project with huge cultural and social implications. This time tropical and European butterflies were the issues of discussion. The guided tour in the Rotterdam Zoo, with the spectacular tunnel underneath the marine aquarium and the butterfly garden were Louwerens-Jan Nederlof works. The last day was at the Amterdam Zoo, Artis with the lecture about spiders, a butterfly’s worst nightmare. Ko Veltman talked about “Dreamnight at the Zoo”, a special day for chronically ill and disabled children, in a Zoo or other animal parcs. After was visited the Zoo, the insectarium and the new butterfly house which had opened 4 days before. The four days went by very fast, but again it has been a warm gathering of new and friends to talk about about butterflies and other things. The informal meetings in the late evening, after the official part of the program, often at the hotel bar but otherwise in Gerlinde’s room made for an excellent opportunity to make new contacts and meet such nice people from all different countries, from Russia to Mexico. (This text is in part a summary of the report of Benno Dufour, Biologist, of the Butterfly Garden “Vlindertuin”, Knokke-Heist / Belgium)

13-16 November, 2007 Mariposas de Mindo and Heliconius Butterfly Works did host the 2007 ICBES gathering in the valley of Mindo in the western foothills of the tropical Andes of Ecuador. It was a great meeting with many participants from all around the world that enjoy very much of the organisation and the fantastic Ecuatorian nature. At this meeting were presented the IABE(S) guidelines and the future conservation projects as well as were discussed and presented many important issues such as the inclusion of the suppliers in the association. Delegates were also allowed to vist the most valuable Mindo butterfly farmig projects.
